Using a mic through the aux port

Postby JeffSchmitz64 » Mon Jun 09, 2025 4:28 pm

What would be the simplest way to use the aux port for a dynamic mic input? On another amp I use Klark Technic Mic Booster https://www.klarkteknik.com/klarkteknik/product?modelCode=0838-AAT combined with a battery powered phantom power dongle and it works great. However, it's not working on the Tonex Cab, I get no sound.

With the mic connected directly to the aux port, I do get sound, but (as expected) it's not very loud.

Hello, I think the Klark Teknik CT1 is a balanced inline mic preamp that expects a proper mic input with 48V phantom power, like on a mixing console or audio interface. AUX ports (like on the Tonex Cab) don’t supply phantom power, nor do they correctly load balanced mic signals.
Most mic boosters (like the CT1) only raise the mic signal by +20 to +25 dB, still below line level. You can use something like the Radial SB-48UB (a compact inline phantom power supply and preamp) if you want portable and battery-friendly.

Thanks Rachel,
I do have phantom power inline with the booster, and the setup I'm trying works great with the Yamaha THR-III auxiliary port, but not with the Tonex aux port. I figured an aux port is an aux port, might they have different line levels such that the Tonex requires more output from the booster/pre-amp?
