Mic pres used to model amps/cabs/mics in AT 5?

Postby Powersof10 » Fri Apr 23, 2021 2:50 am

What kind of mic-pres were used in the process of modeling the new VIR tech and cabinets+mic combinations? For example, an SM 57 dynamic mic running into an API mic pre would sound different than if it ran through a Neve pre.

I had the idea to ask after watching a great interview with Cedric Groyer and Davide Barbi:

So, just curious as to what the process the engineers used to pick mic pres for their modeling.

Thanks,

Hello P10

I haven't seen any firm answers to this. However, I would hazard a guess at them using a super clean pre so as to not impart any additional colour to the signal. That would also mean that a possibility for future expansion would be to have a mic pre section in AT to allow you to make your own processing chain.

....hang on, I think I've just thought of a feature request for the wish list :D

You can kinda fudge a Neve pre using the EQ-81 in a post-cab slot, although that then places it on the bus in the mixer so it will process the combined mics if you have them both active on a single cab.

Hi Garfy,

Yeah it's a bit of a mystery innit. Definitely a major request on my wish list!

I haven't got the app or plugin open at the moment, but I think you can place the EQ-81 (or other units) either before the mixer or after the mixer -- or both. (That is, you can place an EQ-81 or other unit after the cab but before the mixer, and then place another EQ-81 or other unit after the mixer).

I was working with Amplitube for a bass track the other day, and and rack units at three points in the chain: on the DI bath, on a single-amp/cab path (after the cab), and then also after the mixer (where the DI and amp paths come together).

Yep, you're correct. However, if you place it after the cab and before the mixer (in the signal chain box) it inserts in the bus, so on the combined signal of mic 1, mic 2 and the room. Placing it after the mixer puts it on the master bus, so the combined output of everything possible (upto 3 buses and 3 DIs).

What I was thinking was an insert post-mic but pre-bus, just as on a console. Like this:

Oh, right, OK! Gotcha. Yes, that would be a cool addition!
