Help w I/O stompers stomp mode vs

I got this stomp over a year ago and finally got around to setting it up. Been using Axe I/O on a Mac for a While along with a I/O duo on a iOS device so I am familiar with the product.

I finally got around to messing with the stomp. I connect my iPad to the stomp with a red ring din to lightning. IPad is charging.
Start AmpliTube. But the foot switches do nothing. I can hold switches 3 and 4 and the LED on the stomp mode LED does go on and off. The switches are doing nothing. I also noticed that the iPad is using internal microphone input. How do I get the switches to work?

BTW I tried another iPad. Same thing

I have no idea what I did but I got it working. The only issue now is volume level. Very low even with the gain not clipping and the device output all the way up.
