Capture with Mic or XLR-DI only no attenuator?

Postby william18 » Fri May 05, 2023 6:17 pm

Is the attenuator required to capture, or can you capture with only a mic to interface?

Also one of my amps have a XLR-DI output (Peavy Invective 120) can this be used as well?

Do you mean TONEX Capture? If so it is not an attenuator is is merely a helpful piece of hardware that routes the signals more easily and efficiently.

Yes Tonex capture, sorry.

So an Attenuator is not necessary then?

Sorry just trying to understand if the signal is Mic only, or if it uses the attenuated speaker signal.

I'm looking at the Tonex capture and it does appear to be an attenuator from the amps power out.

Alright so let change my question a bit.

Tonex CS software ( I cannot make captures without a hardware license)
It says "Modeler is not available with this version of ToneX"

Tonex Software ( Can you make captures without the Tonex Capture box )

Tonex Max ( Can you make captures without the Tonex Capture box )

I just cannot find the information I need to figure out what I need to buy, and DO NOT need to buy.

Thanks for any replies ;) ...

You need an interface with at least one input and 3 outputs, and a reamp box to do captures.

Tonex capture is NOT a load box/attenuator. Most tube heads must be connected to a cabinet or load box. Not sure about the Invective. Some newer heads can be run without loads nowadays.

So, Tonex capture is not mandatory. Some load boxes have direct out which will give you a head only capture. The Peavey di out will probably emulate a head/cab combo.

Good luck

Thank you very much for the reply.

It would be nice if there was a list of what is necessary/required, Software/Hardware
And what it optional.

I'll keep at it, there has to be a manual or something somewhere.

So if you have a Tonex Capture box you will still need a Load Box / Attenuator?

Direct Amp
TONEX Capture allows you to feed your amp with exactly the right signal using the left attenuation control
TONEX Capture “From Amp” circuit takes a copy of your amp’s direct output and safely sends it back to your audio interface’s input
Capturing the signal direct means you can record anywhere, without microphones or sound isolation. You can use TONEX’s and AmpliTube’s VIR™ technology to access hundreds of ultra-authentic virtual cabs and IRs to complete your tone.

I also realise now that there are actually 4 versions of Tonex Software not 3.
Tonex CS, FREE version.
Tonex SE, Comes with Capture hardware.
Standard, and MAX.

That is what was confusing CS vs SE. they are not all 4 listed on the shop..
At least now I know why my version is useless.

That depends. If you are using the speaker out of the head in to the capture, there is another jack on the capture that has to go to either a cab or load box/attenuator.
But if you are using a direct output from the head that is separate from the speaker out, then you might be ok. Refer to the amp manual for that. Not me, lol

Thanks.

I'm just not seeing/finding a Manual or diagram anywhere showing a load box in a diagram.
I don't have any amps with a (Line Out) only (Speaker Out), or (Effects Loop). other then the XLR-DI on the invective which I do not have yet.

Instruction are vague.

In this diagram it says connect from amps speaker out to tonex capture.
I do not see a load box in the diagram. there is a switch on the tonex capture to select (Power Out). I just want to make sure I get this right.

K, so they are showing the wire from "To Cab" to "Cab Input". That's where you attach the load box instead of the cab and you select the power switch on the capture. The load box needs to be the same ohms as the output fyi.

I thought it was weird that they don't show a diagram for the direct capture. This is how I do most of my captures.

So these guys are capturing a complete half stack with just a mic, and Tonex capture box.

I think I may end getting the Tonex Pedal/Capture/MAX combo from Sweetwater.
Then later get a load box for capturing the amp direct.
