Fender amps: excess skeumorphism

Postby dmitch » Wed Dec 23, 2020 8:49 pm

{Mod edit: split into its own thread, for clarity and focus]

I'm not sure this is the right thread - it's related to the GUI. Most of the Fender amps, when displayed in the Amp View, are shown in a way in which you can't see the exact values of the knobs. See screen shot here:

You can only see the exact value of a knob when you touch it with a mouse.

I understand how this happened - it's related to the camera's perspective and so forth - but there is such a thing is too much skeumorphism. ;) AT4 showed these knobs in a more user-friendly way.

Good catch, I'll report it too.

I'm curious - have they been tilted from the GUIs in AT4?

I presume that that panel is at quite an angle in real life. So you would not see all the dials there either.

But not so much?

Here are the pics from the AT4 and AT5 Gear Model manuals:

what I meant was that the amp seems tilted more in the AT4 shot where as you get a front on view of AT5 (obviously the knob section is tilted on the amp.)

Ah, I see. Well, at least the pics show the difference.

Same here, it's a bit disconcerting, I thought maybe it was just me moaning.
But seriously I don't see the logic of hiding the full view of the Fender knobs, it's the same with the Mesa Boogie collection.
I guess from a guitarists point of view we are used to looking down onto our amps where we can see the knob values.
So come on IK can you tilt the graphics on A5 a tad, you will please a lot of Fender/Boogie users.

I guess the IK Multimedia team mounted a camera on their fully automatized, robotic measurement system when they were doing their Volumetric Impulse Response Technology measurements. ;)

A way to kill two birds with one stone opportunity that the team just couldn't resist.

Strange. When AT5 first came out, support got back to me quickly. Now, I have 3 or 4 tickets out that never got a response.

(Including this topic) edited.

I tried it out thinking with all of the realism, maybe you can tilt the amp, but I couldn't when I tried it... As you mentioned, you can only see the values when using your mouse, as shown in my video below, which is bad if you like to make screen prints like I do.

This has been added to the wishlist thread as noted above, support is aware via those who reported that they do not like this graphic representation, topped off by mods having to remove needless trashing of the IK team who worked hard on an amazing piece of software over a graphic decision they don't agree with so this thread has run its course.
