Connect uno to use via usb for recording ?

Postby tattedguitarist » Mon Apr 08, 2019 4:07 pm

I read online that it’s possible to record via usb over midi, is that true? If so what’s the process of getting it working I tried testing out plugged in to my computer with logic and it does not find the uno, I mostly want to use it for fl studio and Abelton. This is a total rookie question but heyy

Hello tattedguitarist and welcome to the forum.

The UNO synth will only send MIDI info over USB (both directions). Audio is only generated by the analogue outputs so you should connect those to your interface and record the output in your DAW.

Hope that helps.

Ok, so the first thing I would do would be to plug headphones into the UNO just to double check that it is outputting audio. After that, it depends on a couple of things:

1) What OS/DAW are you using?
2) What audio interface are you using?
3) Does the UNO Synth editor software confirm that MIDI is working correctly over USB?

Can you talk us through what you have done already so we can offer advice.

Okay so I have the uno from the output going into a scarlet output one. It’s connected probably to the compute to tool some pics of what I did. Not sure If it’s possible to post them on here. USB works property. Again I have the out going to in the input of my scarlet.

Ok, I'll assume you have the audio output of the UNO plugged into input 1 of your interface and you have Software Monitoring turned on in preferences.

1) In Logic, create a new mono audio track with the inputs being "In 1"
2) Click on the 'I' icon on the new audio track to monitor incoming audio
3) As the UNO is playing your sequence/sounds raise the input gain on your interface until you can see a signal showing on Logic's level meter. At this point you should be hearing the sound as well, if you have headphones or speakers plugged from the interface.
4) Raise the gain until you are happy with the level of audio coming in.
5) To record the UNO output, engage the 'R' button on the audio track and record as normal.

Hope that helps.

Maybe it’s the cable I was using ? I’m getting a 1/4 to 1/8 trs cable while I was previously using a ox cable connected to a quarter inch adapter . Do you think it will make a difference?

I've never heard of this type of cable before so I couldn't say.

I'm assuming you have plugged headphones direct into the UNO to confirm it is outputting audio?

A 1/8" to 1/4" TRS might be causing an issue as the polarity flip may well be cancelling if your interface has a balanced input (the output of the UNO is dual mono as far as I know). If you could get a 1/8" to 1/4" TS you might find that works, or a stereo 1/8" to 2 mono 1/4" jacks and only use one of them.

I’m not sure why this is sooooo complicated I’m really close to just returning it. Especially with barely any info online about properly recording it.

UNO Synth is an analog device, so you'd record it like you would any analog synth. The USB connection is only for the UNO Synth Editor and MIDI control.

Per the Specs page at https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/u ... hp?p=specs the output is:

Audio Out: Mini-jack 3.5mm stereo (mono summed)

Like I said, if you are sending dual mono out (UNO) into a mono balanced input (Scarlet) using standard TRS, then you may well be inadvertently getting cancellation caused by the polarity flip inherent in balanced connections. This would lead you to a nulled signal. Without having a unit in front of me I can't test this and so a ticket into Official IK Support would give you a definitive answer.

As an example, this type of cabe https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K59CQ3R/re ... cb42bea3b6 will give you dual mono out, into two unbalanced mono 1/4" jacks. Plugging only one into the Scarlett input should give you what you need. Again, without having the unit in front of my I can't test this.

Hope that helps.

Caveat - using this dual mono into 2 x unbalanced mono MAY exhibit ground noise if you have the UNO powered over USB via your computer. If that happens you should refer to page 37 of the user guide for a way to stop this happening.
