New User Question / DAW

Postby JoMonto » Fri Aug 06, 2021 7:33 pm

Hello,

I'm new to this midi world and trying to learn. I'm a complete novice.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a DAW that works on a Mac with Sample Tank 4?
Preferable freeware or a reasonably priced product that is entry level. For now, it's just to play with and learn.

I can't download Garage Band, because it wants me to upgrade the OS to Big Sur first and I'm not in the mood to deal with a buggy OS or issues with Sample Tank compatibility.

I appreciate the time and help,

thanks,
-john

Hello 1Abcdefg and welcome to the forum.

All recent DAWs should work with SampleTank 4.

Some you can have a look at:
Reaper - 60 day fully-functional evaluation period. $60 after that.
Bitwig Studio - no time limit, Save is disabled
Waveform Free
Cakewalk by Bandlab

DarkStar ... interesting, if true.

Darkstar -

Reaper looks interesting and not crazy expensive.
Thank you for the response.

GarageBand is installed on all Macs, free of charge. While it's not as fully featured as Logic Pro, it's a good place to get started. I've done some fairly complex, multi-part audio recordings with it.

If you're using a Mac, then Logic Pro X is a great way to go; it's what I use.

I'm using an older Mac with Mojave and everything works great. Last year I had the spinner hard drive replaced with an internal SSD and I had the RAM upgraded so it's fast. In the next year or two I might get a new machine.

GarageBand is a great set of training wheels if you're new and it will help prepare you for Logic, which is very powerful, nice looking and easy to use.

One of the features in Logic that makes it the best, for me, is the "Drummer" feature. It's such a fast way to build excellent, real sounding drum parts.

Sampletank 4 works really well on my machine-- both in my DAW and in standalone mode. I have some other very nice VSTs from other companies, but always find myself preferring to work and play in Sampletank.

Good luck
