No sound using ToneX Editor

Postby tgmotz » Sat Mar 15, 2025 3:23 am

Hi everyone. I finished installing ToneX Editor, launched it and I'm not getting any sound out of my headphones.

The setup;
ToneX Pedal with solid light on one of the foot switches (not in interface mode).
Left and Right output from ToneX pedal into Focusrite 2i2 3rd Gen.
Headphones plugged into Focusrite 2i2 with volume knob for headphones at 75%.
Guitar in input jack on ToneX pedal.
Strumming the guitar shows signal is going to both inputs on the Focusrite as they light up green.

There's no issues using the ToneX software, the traditional one. Leaving everything hooked up as is and launching ToneX Max or AmpliTube 5 is able to output to my headphones.

Drivers used as ASIO, sampled at 512 and output frequency is 44.1 khz

PC is Windows 11.

I wasn't able to find any audio options in the ToneX Editor software to verify if it was using the correction driver however I can confirm that the other IK Multimedia software is using the ASIO driver and has no issue outputting to the audio interface.

I'm stuck, any suggestions?

ToneX Pedal firmware is 1.6.13
The ToneX Pedal's firmware was updated when I launched ToneX Editor for the first time.

I used the IK Multimedia Product Manager app to reinstall TONEX MAX which included the standalone ToneX Editor software but this did not improve the situation. It's the same.
The only app I'm unable to get a sound from is when I'm using the ToneX Editor app in the existing configuration outlined in my original post.

Some more troubleshooting.

I've plugged my ToneX Pedal into the LINE IN on my Freyette PS-100 and confirmed the pedal works just fine with the ToneX Editor software running as I manipulate the pedal via USB from my PC.

So this leaves me with the 1 issue still, which is I can't get any sound out of my Focusrite 2i2 3rd gen using the ToneX Editor when the ToneX pedal is plugged into the audio interface as the Focusrite, although the green circular LEDs confirm a signal is received, is not outputting to either the monitors or my headphones plugged into the Focusrite. But when I use the ToneX Max software (not the Editor) or Amplitube 5 and leave all the cables as they are, there is sound and it's not an issue.

If there were a way to verify the sound driver config from within the ToneX Editor software, I think I could at least narrow down where the problem might be. Right now, I'm assuming the ToneX Editor software uses whatever is defined in the ToneX Max software but that doesn't make sense since it doesn't behave the same way with the audio interface as the the other software.

I think I got it to work and I'm feeling silly about this because I wasn't aware that a DAW running on the PC was required in order to hear the sounds from the ToneX Pedal through the Focusrite 2i2 audio interface (or any audio interface for that matter).

I'm using Ableton Live 12 and I also have Reaper installed.

I decided to launch it to see if I can figure this out and noticed a signal was registering in one of the channels. In the settings of the channel there's a section with the following 3 options, "In", "Auto", "Off".
I selected "In" and could hear the sounds from my guitar, through the ToneX Pedal and through the Focusrite 2i2 audio interface.

I am able to launch ToneX Pedal separately and manipulate the pedal with it switching from tone to tone using any effects I wish that are built into the pedal.

Wow, I can't believe I made myself suffer like this.

Thank goodness I talk to myself so much that I figured this out on my own. I hope I save more people like me struggling to rub 2 braincells together.

Take care,
T.
