Hi All,

Here is one that is very different from everything I have posted in the forum so far. It is a simple arrangement of a song Kelly and I wrote. I was trying to recapture the vibe of a summer day when we were on the road sitting outside our motel room in Port Alice killing time before the gig (small town on the north tip of Vancouver Island).

I tried to take CS' advice about the vocals tending to be too loud in my mixes, hope I moved in the right direction. Anyway, any advice or constructive criticism would be appreciated.

Hey Dan, sweet new track buddy, a really nice melody and beautifully performed by you both. That exit harmony is perfection and I know that level of vocal harmony sync is not easy, beautiful work.

Seeing as how you have already invited me into the subject on this thread, I will comment on the vocal blend and mix happily.

I have to be honest in feeling a little conflicted with this particular track though, the vocal production and clarity are 100% on the mark, every word is perfectly clear (no need for a lyric sheet here ), however, with this acoustic style of performance I have always felt the vocal sounds a little more organic just slightly higher in the mix than I would go for in a rock track (don't hate me for saying that man ). I'm not saying it will definitely be an improvement, but I would experiment with another 0.5 - 1.0Db with the overall vocal level. The acoustics have a strong bottom end presence, which is great with acoustics no question, but that can also dominate presence fidelity as well, hence the requirement for a little more Db in the vocal mix to balance.

In any case, I think the new vocal level is a really nice improvement in your mix and has a sense of settling in with the mix rather than dominating it.

Rawer production suits this song, it gives it some patina and charm.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the feedback on the track. CS no need to feel conflicted if mixing was a template that we loaded into our DAWs where would the fun be. I really do appreciate your suggestion about the vocals dominating the mix. It is this kind of feedback that helps me and anyone else reading these posts move in the right direction.

Right now I am mixing in a room with only a couple of sound absorbers. I still need to make a cloud above the mix position and install ARC 4 hardware (that is sitting on the floor in the box patiently waiting). I have to get off my lazy backside to get these things done and then learn the room sound. Hopefully then my mixes will move in the right direction.

Thanks for making such a sweet song that has no sharp edges and is more like a feather pillow (you get the idea). Is it a great mix? Nope. But don't care. It's the lyrics and folk style that I like a lot. Please post full lyrics would be great. I like "...it's always the same, just a different day". This is an instant classic!
